ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The new school year will begin next month with mostly online classes, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday as the Kurdistan Region continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The government decided that the first semester should be studied online," KRG spokesperson Jotiar Adil announced on Facebook, adding that the decision will not apply to 12th grade high school students, who must attend classes in person.
The government's decision came following a green-light from the ministry of health.
"We have informed the Council of Ministers that they can start the new school year from the beginning of the next month," Dr. Khalis Qadir, an official from the health ministry told Rudaw.
Schools and universities were closed on February 26 as part of the KRG’s measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 and have remained closed ever since.
The education ministry approved online education in mid-April but eventually cancelled examinations as pupils and students missed out on a significant chunk of the curriculum. Grade 12 students went ahead with their final examinations under strict coronavius containment measures.
Primary school pupils in grades one to three automatically progressed to the next grade.
Students in grades four to 11 had their second semester examinations cancelled and grades from the first semester were counted for the entire year.
The Kurdistan Region has 6,429 schools, with more than 1.7 million students enrolled last year.
