ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The bodies of a father and son who were killed in a house fire in the city of Swansea in Wales were returned to the Kurdistan Region and laid to rest in Erbil on Friday.
Three-year-old Muhammed Lawa Esmael lost his life when a fire broke out in their family house in South Wales last week. His father Naemat Lawa Esmael, 51, had run into the fire in hopes of saving his young son’s life. He died two days later due to the severity of his wounds.
Aram Ali, a friend of Esmael, said that the blaze was first discovered by the wife who immediately told her two other children to get out of the house, before informing her husband of the fire.
“She called on Hajji [Esmael] telling him there was a fire. He ran out of the shower and into the fire to save his son. But unfortunately he could not save his son nor himself,” Ali told Rudaw.
The police are yet to establish the cause of the fire over a week after the incident.
I do not know what stage the investigations have reached,” said Masoud Lawa Esmael, Esmael’s brother, adding “maybe the fire was caused by a laptop exploding, a short circuit, or an iPad left on charge for too long, I do not know.”
The deceased father had moved to the UK 22 years ago. He was buried in an Erbil cemetery
