ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said Wednesday that an Israeli attack on Qatar's capital city of Doha the day earlier is "a violation of international law."

"The attack on the State of Qatar is a violation of international law," Prime Minister Barzani wrote on X. "We support an urgent, peaceful solution to regional problems, and an end to all forms of tension and violence."

The Israeli military said on Tuesday that it carried out a “precise strike” against the leadership of the Palestinian Hamas group, an attack which drew international condemnations.

Tel Aviv said the targeted leaders were “directly responsible” for the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which led to Israel’s brutal military offensive on the Gaza Strip.

Hours after the attack, the Kurdistan Region Presidency condemned the attack, saying it "puts the security and stability of the region at stake."

"We are fully supporting Qatar, and calling on the international community to prevent such acts, and help restore peace and stability to the region," the presidency said in a statement.

Doha said Israel's “cowardly attack constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents in Qatar.”

Qatar has played a key role in ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that the targeting of Hamas leaders was an “independent Israeli operation.”

A Hamas official in Gaza told AFP that the Israeli strike targeted Hamas negotiators in Gaza during a meeting to discuss US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire.

Hamas leaders have been headquartered in Doha for years.
