ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A new medical book co-authored by Kurdish doctor Goran Latif and Italian professor Stefano Di Girolamo on sinus health has been published by the prestigious American academic publisher Springer, and is set to become a key reference for medical professionals worldwide.

Dr. Latif, who is a specialist in head and neck surgeries, told Rudaw in an interview that the publication of the book titled “Maxillary Sinus: A Comprehensive Guide” marks a significant achievement.

"Writing a scientific and medical book - especially if it is published by the global source Springer - is not an easy task. It requires many revisions, accuracy, and depth of topics,” he said.

Dr. Latif emphasized the significance of a Kurd being among the authors of such a comprehensive and internationally distributed publication. “This book can serve as a guide for future research,” he noted.

The American publisher “has more than 2,900 journals and 300,000 medical books” in its collection, Dr. Latif said, highlighting the significance of a Kurd being among its published authors.

Addressing common childhood illnesses in the Kurdistan Region, the Kurdish doctor pointed out to frequent misdiagnosis of sinus-related illnesses in children. “Not all snoring is due to adenoids or sinusitis.” “In fact, “sinusitis is rare in children,” he said, elaborating that “what is often misdiagnosed as sinusitis may actually be related to issues with the third tonsil, located behind the nose.”

He further commented on medical practices and patient expectations in the Kurdistan Region that may at times be harmful. "Unfortunately, in the Kurdistan Region, most people request a smaller nose, but overly reducing the size can impair breathing,” he warned, calling for more awareness of the long-term health consequences of cosmetic procedures.

Sharing his goal of advancing medical research in the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Latif stated that the publication of his book stands as a testament to this commitment.

Co-author Dr. Di Girolamo told Rudaw that Dr. Latif “must be the light that enlightens many others in Kurdistan - namely surgeons - who wish to follow in his footsteps.” He further expressed a desire to promote greater international medical collaboration and data exchange.

“Maxillary Sinus: A Comprehensive Guide” is a high-yield resource for professionals in various disciplines, including otorhinolaryngology, audiology, radiology, and maxillofacial surgery.

Divided into sixteen chapters, it begins by detailing the anatomy, physiology, and epidemiology of the maxillary sinus. It goes on to explore a wide range of topics, including surgical techniques, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy to the vascular management of lesions around the maxilla.

The final chapters focus on reconstruction options for maxillary sinus defects and cleft palate conditions. The book is also accompanied by intraoperative videos and includes detailed case reports, allowing readers to see real-life clinical applications.
