ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region on Saturday called on all political parties to unite and accept each other in light of serious threats facing the Region.
“Today, as the region is going through a tough and unstable situation and the Kurdistan Region is facing serious threats, we need unity, coexistence, acceptance, and cooperation between all parties and components, and specifically between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) more than ever,” President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement read by the president’s advisor Dilshad Shahab in Sulaimani.
The statement was read during the ceremony held to honor the life of Akam Omar, the late commander of Sulaimani-based Peshmerga commando forces, whose body was returned to Sulaimani on Saturday from Germany nearly two months after being injured in a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) IED attack.
“We once again call on all political parties to set aside their differences and issues and resolve them through dialogue and understanding,” the statement added.
Omar died in a German hospital on Monday after being critically injured in the midst of an anti-ISIS operation in Garmiyan administration’s Qum Palik village on October 19.
A large number of Kurdish and foreign officials and commanders attended a ceremony at Sulaimani International Airport, organised to welcome the dead body of Omar on Saturday.
The presidency statement comes as the Kurdistan Region’s main ruling party , the KDP, last week started meeting with different political parties in a bid to defuse outstanding political tensions in the Region.
The Kurdistan Region’s two main ruling parties, the KDP and the PUK, have for decades disagreed over a variety of issues, sometimes leading to major unrests in the Region.
Despite working together in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the two parties have established control over different parts of the Region, often being referred to as the “Yellow Zones and Green Zones. “ The KDP is dominant in Erbil and Duhok provinces, while the PUK rules Sulaimani and Halabja.
Despite many thinking that the parties agreeing on electing a PUK candidate for the Iraqi presidency in October hinted at the parties getting closer to a common ground, in an exclusive interview with Rudaw in November, PUK leader Bafel Talabani said that their relationship with the KDP is not in its best position.
