ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A bus carrying tourists from Iraqi central and southern provinces hit a building in Erbil province’s Bekhal Resort on Friday, causing the injury of at least 22 people, according to a local official.
Bekhal Resort is located in Rawanduz district, with its waterfall attracting thousands of tourists from other parts of the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi central and southern provinces.
Ahmed Qadir, Rawanduz Mayor, told Rudaw’s Bakhtyar Qadir that nearly two dozen people were injured.
“No deaths have been recorded so far but 22 people were injured. Most of them have been given first aid and then moved to Ashti Hospital for further treatment. The [driver] of the bus lost control of the vehicle which hit a nearby building in Bekhal Resort,” he said.
He added that several people could be transferred to Erbil due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Rudaw has learnt that the bus was carrying 45 tourists.
Soran Administration's traffic department said in a statement that the incident led to the injury of 31 people.
