Fire in Sulaimani town damages already endangered nature

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region - A fire broke out in the Sharbazher region of Sulaimani which burned over 2,000 dunams of land. No casualties were reported but the blaze dealt extensive damage to the nature. 

“I saw around six to seven trees that were burnt, but there might be around 2,000 trees or maybe even more that were burnt,” Hoshyar Jabbar, a resident of the area, told Rudaw’s Peshawa Bakhtyar on Tuesday. “A lot of trees caught fire and it was a disaster.” 

According to the villagers, one of those trees that burned down was around 60 years old.

The fire will leave long-term side effects in the region and caused heavy damage to the environment.

“All the old trees have been burnt down and the leaves of the younger ones have been damaged,” said Latif Mohammed, a resident. “Yesterday I went to look at the trees, and around 500 trees were all burned down.” 

Burning trees, bushes, have been damaged, burned, and smoke from the burning trees is still rising in some areas. According to the residents of the village, a huge quantity of trees were burnt that were worth 1 billion US dollars.

According to preliminary information from the Sulaimani Forestry Police, more than 2,000 dunams of land have been burned in the Sharbazher region.

An Iraqi dunam is roughly 2,500 square meters.
