ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday congratulated the people of Kurdistan Region on the occasion of Eid al-Adha feast, calling on the political parties to be united and turn a new page in their relations.
President Barzani called on the public in a tweet to use the occasion as a “new chance of renewing relations and to turn a new page.”
“The people of Kurdistan's top expectation is to see the political parties using Eid as a chance to be united and get along with one another,” he added.
Eid al-Adha is a four-day Islamic feast. This year, it begins on Wednesday. During the occasion, Muslims visit one another, trying to mend their ties. Kurdish leaders and politicians annually remind rival parties that it is never late to end their tensions.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also congratulated the Region’s Muslims on the occasion, calling for “tranquility and forgiveness.”
Relations between the Region’s ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have seen many ups and downs in recent years. Tensions between both parties deteriorated in recent months but they held a meeting in Erbil on Monday in a bid to de-escalate their tensions.
Masoud Barzani, leader of the KDP and former president of Kurdistan Region, said in his congratulatory message that he hopes the Eid will bring “stability” to the region and the world.
