ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three people were injured by lightning in southern Erbil province late on Friday. Two of the injured are Peshmerga who were struck while on duty, according to officials.
The Peshmerga ministry said in a statement on Saturday that two of its Peshmerga in Taq Taq sub-district “were hit by lightning while on duty. They are currently in good health, receiving treatment at Taq Taq Hospital.”
Taq Taq is located south of Koya in Erbil province.
“Lightning injured three people in three different places tonight at 8pm,” Hawkar Ali, spokesperson for Koya health directorate, told Rudaw's Brwa Kiyani on Friday.
“One of the people injured by lightning is a Peshmerga from Pelkana [in Kirkuk] and the other one is also a Peshmerga but from Shiwa Sur. The health condition of one of them is critical,” he said.
The third person was at work guarding a fish farm in Taq Taq when he was struck. “He’s in good spirits and has been sent home,” said Ali.
Lightning from the first storms of the season lit up the skies in several areas of the Kurdistan Region on Friday.
