DUHOK, Kurdistan Region — Newroz picnics are joyous affairs, but often heaps of litter are left behind.
Some of the garbage at this spot in Duhok has been here for years. A few good samaritans have decided to change that.
“All picnickers should collect their garbage when they come here. We will come back here tomorrow or the day after. We will collect the litter and take it back home,” said picknicker Nabi Fars.
It is customary for people in the Kurdistan Region to go for picnics on Newroz. Each of the region’s provinces has a number of popular picnic spots. However, many have no facilities for people to throw out their trash.
Municipalities often have hard times collecting the waste, with many of the spots located in remote areas. Sometimes non-governmental organizations help them clean the areas.
“It actually becomes a burden on us when people do not abide by the guidelines. Most of the contaminated areas are outside of the municipality territory. It is not mentioned in the contracts [with cleaning companies] and becomes a problem for us. No government in the world can collect [this] garbage,” said Diyar Bahri, the general director of Duhok municipality.
Most of the litter is plastic, glass, and cans, the majority of which only decompose after hundreds of years.
