ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A Kurdish organization is hosting a major online job fair this week, advertising more than five thousand job vacancies across Iraq, amidst a tanking economy and mass poverty.
Iraq has experienced a major economic recession in recent months, feeling the toll of a drop in oil prices and global coronavirus shutdowns. Poverty rates in the country are expected to soar to 40 percent, reports AFP.
Around 5,300 job opportunities at more than a hundred companies, national and international organizations, private schools and universities will be virtually up for grabs on the Rwanga Foundation’s online platform, Ari Rasul, the foundation’s communications director, told Rudaw on Monday.
Jobs in a wide range of fields, including construction, tourism, trade, petroleum, industry, communication, agriculture, advertisement, aviation, automotive, banking, supplies, medicine and security, are on offer, he added.
The job fair is scheduled to take place online due to the coronavirus pandemic from November 3 to 5. It will also offer training workshops, panels, and internships provided by the foundation, said Rasul.
The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on poverty in Iraq. A detailed assessment by Iraq's Minister of Planning in cooperation with the World Bank, and a number of UN agencies, has found that the country’s number of the poor has reached 11,400,000 individuals, from 10 million before the crisis.
This comes as demonstrations continue across Baghdad and Iraq's Shiite-majority south, with protestors calling for jobs, basic services, as well as a total overhaul of the ruling class and an end to corruption.
Iraq’s poverty rate rose from 22% in 2018 to 34% in July 2020, according to a press statement by Iraqi Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Adel Al-Rikabi, reported Al Jazeera.
Rwanga is a non-governmental organization based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It conducts projects and activities across Iraq focusing on education, youth, environment and vulnerable groups.
