ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday continued a series of high-level meetings in Baghdad, engaging with representatives of minority groups and provincial officials as consultations to form Iraq’s next government progress.
On the second day of his visit, President Barzani met with Yazidi, Fayli Kurdish, and Sabean-Mandaean lawmakers in the federal parliament, where discussions focused on the situation of these communities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The meeting emphasized “the necessity of their [minorities] active participation in the political process and the realization of their constitutional rights.”
President Barzani reaffirmed efforts to ensure these communities’ inclusion in political and administrative frameworks, stressing that such participation would strengthen stability and reinforce “the values of justice and equality,” the statement added.
The meetings are part of the Kurdish President’s broader visit to Baghdad, which began on Monday, during which he held consultations with Iraqi political leaders, diplomats, and lawmakers in his capacity as President of the Kurdistan Region and First Deputy Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
The visit comes as negotiations continue to form Iraq’s new federal government, involving key actors from the country’s ruling Shiite Coordination Framework and Sunni Arab blocs.
In a separate meeting, President Barzani also held talks with Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani, focusing on developments in the southern province and its relations with the Kurdistan Region.
Both sides emphasized “the importance of expanding cooperation and exchanging expertise to benefit from successful provincial experiences across various sectors,” the Kurdistan Region Presidency relayed.
