ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi parliament's independent MPs on Sunday presented a seven-point initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing political crisis plaguing the country, after a top leader tasked them with forming a government.

The lawmakers stressed the need for Iraq's next government to be formed without the interference of external parties "in any way" and that the file is solely an "internal national affair."

Furthermore, the need to form a government without preconditions was also highlighted, with the statement saying that past iterations of the Iraqi government have garnered repeated failures.

Top Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr earlier in May called on the country's independent lawmakers to form the next government within 15 days, one which his alliance, the legislature's largest, would vote for should the independents successfully manage to complete the task.

The independents called on the parliamentary blocs to unite with them and elect a president within constitutional boundaries, who will then assign a prime minister to form a "government cabinet that is characterized by the highest level of efficiency, experience, and integrity," while ensuring that certain objectives, such as proper minority representation, political and economic reforms, and combatting corruption will be met to prevent the errors of the past from resurfacing.

Another point addressed in the initiative was the need to limit the waste of the state's finances and the misuse of funds, with the MPs suggesting the adoption of "a fair distribution of wealth to all Iraqis."

The statement read that starting Sunday, a body of independent MPs will be formed to "negotiate, explain, and clarify the initiative to the political blocs."

Boycotts over disagreements in the government formation process have pushed Iraq into deep political turmoil. The country has yet to elect a president who will subsequently form a government seven months after it held early elections.
