ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s President Abdul Latif Rashid on Wednesday arrived in the northern province of Nineveh, stressing the need to revive the province economically and rebuild its capital city Mosul which is still suffering the consequences of the Islamic State (ISIS) occupation.
“In Mosul, among our people to listen to their problems and observe the conditions of the city, which suffered as a result of ISIS terrorism, which tried in vain to obliterate its diverse and coexisting identity in peace,” read a tweet from Rashid on Wednesday morning.
The President met with the province’s Governor Najim al-Jubouri, reviewing the economic, security, and service situation in Nineveh, calling on the relevant authorities to make “serious efforts” in order to revive province “economically, structurally, and culturally.”
Rashid also highlighted the value of Nineveh’s natural and agricultural goods and resources.
ISIS first swept through Iraq in 2014, capturing cities across northern and central Iraq, including Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, where the group declared its so-called caliphate.
Mosul was severely damaged and some neighborhoods were all but demolished in an effort by Iraqi, Kurdish, and global coalition forces to retake the city. Control was finally taken from the terrorist group in the summer of 2017.
