ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – One Iraqi soldier was killed and another injured in Kirkuk province late Friday, according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell.
“Security forces in Kirkuk province conducted a search for terrorists who attacked one of the checkpoints of the 45th Brigade in the 11th Division in Mateeq village, north of Daquq district,” read a statement from the Cell. The statement added that one soldier was killed and another injured during the initial attack.
Late on Friday night, a Kirkuk police source told Rudaw, “Several injured members of the Iraqi Army were taken to Daquq hospital, and a number of others are believed to be killed.”
A Rudaw reporter in Kirkuk province stated that the attack took place at 9 p.m.
The Cell also reported the death of a member of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi in Arabic) in a separate attack. The Cell accused “terrorists” of committing both attacks without specifying any particular group.
According to the statement, a Hashd al-Shaabi militia member was killed in an attack in al-Hamdaniya village in Kirkuk’s Zata district. Hashd al-Shaabi militias are generally viewed as pro-Iran, but have been officially integrated into the Iraqi state security apparatus.
While no specific terrorist group was named in the Iraqi Security Media Cell statement, the Islamic State (ISIS) carries out frequent attacks against Iraqi security forces and Kurdish forces in disputed areas claimed by both the Iraqi and Kurdish governments.
In Al-Baba, a weekly propaganda magazine published by ISIS every Thursday, the group claimed to have killed and injured multiple members of Iraqi Army and Hashd al-Shaabi forces in attacks conducted in disputed areas of Iraq over the past week.
Speaking about a different operation than the search detailed in the Security Media Cell statement, Saed Hariba, commander of Joint Operations in Kirkuk, told Rudaw on Friday: “Tonight, Joint Operations Forces, supported by the global coalition’s warplanes, targeted a number of Daesh positions in the south of Kirkuk.”
He claimed that three ISIS fighters were killed in the operation.
The Security Media Cell said today that three members of Hashd al-Ashayiri - the Sunni component of Hashd al-Shaabi - were killed by "live ammunition" by ISIS fighters in the northern Hor al-Pasha area of Baghdad province.
