ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Five civilians were injured on Sunday after an empty bus exploded in a neighborhood of the Syrian capital Damascus, according to state media citing emergency officials.

Syria’s state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), quoting Amer Zarifa, commander of operations for the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management in the Damascus countryside province, said the blast took place in the Ward neighborhood area.

“Five civilians were injured as a result of the explosion of an empty bus in the Ward neighborhood area,” Zarifa said, adding that the wounded were transferred to al-Mouwasat Hospital in Damascus to receive the necessary treatment.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear and authorities have yet to provide further details about the incident.

Damascus has witnessed occasional explosions and security incidents in recent years despite an overall decline in large-scale violence following the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government late last year.
