ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Turkey on Monday released the identity of a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighter that it killed in the Kurdistan Region’s Qandil Mountains on February 2.
According to Turkish state media, information they were provided asserts that Omer Aydin, whose nom de guerre was Renas Aydin, was killed in an operation by Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and army on the Kurdistan Region’s Qandil mountains, where the PKK has a stronghold.
The report also claims that Aydin was the so-called “customs coordination officer of the PKK” and “was also among the most trusted names of the organization.”
The PKK had already announced the identities of those killed during the February 2 Turkish airstrikes on Qandil Mountain.
PKK affiliated Firat News Agency (ANF) reported on March 23 Renas Aydin, Zerdesht Kudwan, Agit Raperin, and Mazlum Efrin were the names of the PKK fighters.
“Our comrades Renas, Zerdesht, Mazlum and Egid, our relentless never fading symbols of resistance, were martyred as a result of the air strikes initiated by the colonialist fascist Turkish state in the Medya Defense areas on Feb 2, 2021,” reported ANF.
The PKK is a Kurdish armed group which has fought Ankara for decades for greater rights for the country’s Kurdish minority.
Turkish forces have pursued the PKK within the Kurdistan Region’s borders for years. Civilians have been caught in the crossfire of the attacks, sometimes being killed in attacks.
Both Erbil and Baghdad have repeatedly called on Ankara to halt its attacks and have demanded the PKK cease using the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi territory to launch attacks on Turkey.
