DNIPRO, Ukraine - The death toll from a Russian missile strike on a residential tower block in Dnipro rose to at least 20, according to Ukrainian officials on Sunday.
A 15-year-old girl is among the casualties caused by an attack on an apartment building in the city on Saturday as Ukrainians celebrated the Old New Year.
Valentyn Reznichenko, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region in central eastern Ukraine announced in a Telegram message that 73 people were injured in one of Russia's deadliest missile attacks on a city that has so far severed as a safe haven for many Ukrainians who have taken shelter there.
Rescue efforts to find people under the rubble are still underway with rescue workers telling Rudaw that around 35 people are still believed to be missing.
The Ukrainian army announced that in Saturday's deadly air campaign, Russia fired 57 missile strikes and carried out 69 attacks from heavy weapon rocket salvo systems. The Ukrainian army has said that they shot down 26 rockets.
Moldova’s president said that debris from Russian projectiles launched on Saturday landed on its territory.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, becoming the first western country to provide the heavy tanks Kyiv has been calling for, AFP reported.
Russia’s embassy to the UK responded by saying the tank supply “will hardly help the Ukrainian military turn the tide in the field.”
With an estimated one million people, Dnipro is Ukraine's fourth-largest city. It is located in the eastern part of Ukraine, 391 km southeast of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
The nearly one-year-long Russian war on Ukraine has resulted in the death of tens of thousands and displaced millions of civilians with the country's economic infrastructure severely damaged in all sectors.
Ukraine has requested that the US provides it with the Patriot missile defense system to protect itself against Russian projectiles. Around 100 Ukrainian troops are set to head to the US next week to begin training on the Patriot batteries.
