ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Tourists are served sweets and confectionaries across checkpoints around Duhok province as a friendly gesture to welcome those who have come a long way from the central and southern Iraqi provinces to the city and its mountainous resorts..
The sweets are provided by the Duhok Tourism Directorate to more than 2,000 tourists from south and central Iraq who visit Duhok province daily. Tourist facilities are also made available at the checkpoints.

"Our plan is to visit these checkpoints regularly to learn more about the situation of tourists coming from central Iraq. We thank these checkpoints for their cooperation with tourists, and we want tourists to know that there is a place that cares about them," Khairi Ali Wasu, the director general of Duhok tourism, told Rudaw’s Naif Ramadhan.

An estimated 1.9 million tourists have visited Duhok province in the past nine months, and Duhok is expected to welcome three million tourists this year. Last year, 2.5 million tourists visited Duhok province.

"We always come to these areas in groups. Thank God the weather here is very nice and the people of Kurdistan are very good. The road is very easy, and I hope this security will continue," said Manal Jabouri, a tourist.

"The Kurdistan Region is a beautiful place, and we enjoy visiting it regularly. The security situation is excellent, and people often come in groups to Ashawa and other resorts," said Younis Saqqa, another tourist.

According to data from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) tourism board, the past year witnessed over six million tourists visiting the Kurdistan Region.

With its relatively moderate temperature in comparison to the rest of the country and its picturesque nature, the Kurdistan Region’s tourism sector has been booming in recent years.
