ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani is set to visit Amman on Sunday for talks with King Abdullah II on strengthening bilateral ties and joint cooperation, the Presidency said on Sunday.
“They will discuss strengthening bilateral ties and joint cooperation between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the Kingdom of Jordan,” the Kurdistan Region Presidency said about Barzani’s expected meeting with Abdullah.
During the visit, President Barzani will also meet with “a number of high-ranking Jordanian officials,” according to the Presidency.
Barzani in February met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi, discussing bilateral ties and regional developments. During their meeting, he highlighted Jordan’s influential role in supporting regional stability and reiterated Erbil’s desire for closer cooperation.
Safadi later told Rudaw that he “relayed the regards” of King Abdullah to President Barzani.
Earlier in April, Barzani condemned recently uncovered plots targeting Jordan’s national security and expressed “full solidarity” with Amman.
During a visit to Erbil last year, Jordanian Agricultural Minister Khaled al-Henefat told Rudaw that Amman aims to increase the “modest” volume of imports from the Kurdistan Region and advance bilateral trade ties.
Thousands of citizens in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq go to Jordan for a range of reasons, including trade, tourism, medical care, and to study.
