ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Heavy rainfall overnight resulted in the collapse of a mud house’s roof in Kirkuk on Thursday, killing a mother and two of her children.
“Due to the heavy rain that Kirkuk experienced last night, a house in Bajwan village, resided by a married couple and their two children, was severely damaged. The wife and the children died in their sleep,” Amer Nuri, spokesperson for Kirkuk’s police, told Rudaw’s Nazanin Goran, adding that the father had left the house early in the morning for work.
The bodies have been transferred to a forensic lab for examination, according to Nuri.
Torrential downpour soaked several provinces in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, resulting in disrupting traffic and suspension of working hours and schools in Sulaimani, Halabja, Penjwen, Garmiyan in the Kurdistan Region and Diyala in Iraq.
Water levels rose in several neighborhoods of Sulaimani on Wednesday, sweeping into at least 40 houses and about 20 public premises, according to Rekan Jamal, spokesperson for the province’s civil defense.
The Kurdistan Region experienced a wave of deadly and destructive floods in late 2021 and early 2022, with the capital Erbil bearing the brunt of the heavy rainstorms.
At least 826 families were affected by the December floods, which killed twelve people, including a ten-month-old baby.
The Minister of Municipality and Tourism at the time assessed the cost of damages caused by the second flood as more than 21 billion dinars (over $14 million).
