ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq's Defense Ministry said four rockets landed inside Baghdad’s Green Zone early Thursday, the fifth such attack in 10 days.
No casualties resulted from the attack, and Iraq's Security Media Cell said security forces had recovered an abandoned rocket launcher near al-Rashid military base in southern Baghdad.
No group has claimed the attack, but the US has attributed past rocket attacks on sites of international importance to Iran-backed militias who it says are looking to further inflame US-Iran tensions.
This morning’s attacks come just two days after three Katyusha rockets landed close to Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A rocket targeted an area near Baghdad International Airport on June 8. The airport hosts an American military base, as well as the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, a branch of the US embassy which has been subject to repeated rocket fire in recent months.
A rocket landed near the US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone on May 19. The Green Zone hosts several Iraqi government ministries, the federal parliament, and foreign diplomatic missions. It was targeted by a spate of rocket attacks at the beginning of the year, with soaring US-Iran tensions following the US killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad's airport on January 3.
Iraqi army bases hosting Coalition troops have also been the target of rocket attacks suspected to have been launched by Iran-backed militias.
