Sesame cultivation has boomed since the outbreak of war in Syria as a low-cost and easy to grow alternative to cotton and wheat.

Farming families in al-Kabr, a town in the eastern countryside of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, rely on the staple to make their living.

“We are planting sesame because its cost is a bit lower and it allows the farmer to rest, he does not need a lot of water, fertilizers, and medicines, and our land in these areas produces sesame well,” says As’ad Al-Salama, a local farmer.

“As for cotton, it has been more than four years since we planted it because it requires high expenses such as water, fertilizers and medicines.”

Pumping water from the Euphrates River to irrigate crops can be extremely costly. After years of conflict, Syria’s infrastructure has become neglected and dilapidated.

“We have planting sesame for about seven to eight years because it is less expensive than other crops such as cotton, wheat and others, which need a lot of fertilizers, medicines and water,” says Mohammed Abdullah, another local farmer.

“As you can see, our water is very weak, so we plant sesame because it is less expensive, so that the land does not remain uncultivated.”
