BEIJING - US President Donald Trump’s visit to China on Wednesday is “very significant” and could help bring “stability” at a time when US-Iran peace efforts are stalled, according to a Chinese policy expert.
Wang Huiyao, founder and president of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), told Rudaw that Trump’s visit to China is “very significant.”
United States President Donald Trump has departed for Beijing ahead of a high-level summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The leaders of the world’s two largest economies are due to meet on Thursday and Friday during Trump’s first visit to China since 2017, with talks expected to focus on trade, Taiwan, technology, and the war involving Iran.
Wang said that since Trump last visited China, “the GDP has doubled and also China [has] become much more influential. And then more important, China has achieved equal status with US. As President Trump said, it's a G2 now.”
The Trump-Xi summit has revived discussion of a “Group of Two” (G2), an informal concept suggesting that the world’s two largest powers could jointly shape global affairs.
“So now President Trump comes with the equitable partner of China to visit. I'm sure this visit will generate a lot of stability, and also we assure the world that the two largest country leaders are talking and they're not fighting. They really find a way to co-exist,” he said.
On whether the US and Iran can reach a deal, Wang said, “I think they can,” adding, “I think either the US or Iran has an intention to continue the fight.”
“With China working on both sides, I see that there's a great possibility that they will take this advantage of China,” he added.
