HAMBURG, Germany - Hussein Faily is a well-known boxing champion in Germany who has won multiple prizes at European boxing championships over the past decades. He has been boxing for nearly 50 years.
Faily’s passion for the sport has made him a talented coach. He now trains multiple people to become professional boxers in Germany’s Hamburg.
"I have won gold medals for Hamburg for 16 consecutive years at the German championships. We competed six times at a European level and won three medals for Germany,” he told Rudaw’s Alla Shally on Tuesday.
Originally from the disputed city of Khanaqin which is populated by Kurds, Faily moved to Germany in 1979 at the age of 17 and has been boxing since. He then became a coach, winning his first gold medal at a boxing competition in 1997, which was followed by numerous other awards that he dedicated to Germany and Khanaqin.
Faily’s skills have attracted the attention of the municipality of Hamburg, which dedicated the place for him, and struck a 25-year contract with him to train the city's youth to promote his sport.
"The secret of my success is that I am loyal to my job. I come here every single day to open the door for boxing athletes,” he said.
