ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least one person was killed and another injured in Kirkuk on Wednesday in separate electrocution incidents caused by flash floods that swept through the disputed city.
One of the victims was an elderly woman who died after floodwaters entered her home, while the injured individual was a municipality worker.
“Due to rising floodwaters that entered a house, an elderly woman was killed,” Aram Sardar, a neighbor, told Rudaw.
In the second incident, a Kirkuk municipality worker was electrocuted in the Rahimawa neighborhood, Adnan Shukur from the municipality’s media office reported.
Shukur said the worker was struck by electricity while “cleaning a manhole to prevent floodwater from accumulating.”
These incidents bring the total number of flood-related fatalities in Kirkuk province to two.
Hundreds of homes and businesses across the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk province have been damaged over the past two days due to heavy rainfall and severe flooding.
Authorities on Wednesday warned of further risks from overflowing rivers and dams.
