HAMAM AL-ALIL — This is Hamam al-Alil camp, outside of Mosul. It houses Iraqi internally displaced persons (IDPs) who face daily struggles.

The families here had affiliation with the Islamic State (ISIS). Their children are denied entry to the official schools run by the Iraq Ministry of Education because they have been deprived of Iraqi ID cards. The mothers are mostly wives of killed or wanted ISIS members.

Um Khattab's husband joined ISIS and now she doesn't know anything about his whereabouts or fate. Her children are being turned away from school.

"All the other children are able to study. But these children go there daily, but then are turned back. They don't give them books or lessons,” she said. “Why? Well, because we don't have documents. Everyday they go and come back.”

The children can attend classes in schools run by aid organizations, but they don't follow the Iraqi school curriculum and the ministry of education does not recognise their certificate.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) says approximately 80,000 families are affected by missing documents.
