ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Four people were killed and three others injured in a deadly car accident on Kirkuk-Tikrit road on Tuesday evening, local officials told Rudaw.

Amr Kakayi, director of media and relations for the Kirkuk traffic police, told Rudaw that the accident occurred between two vehicles, killing two women and two children, all of whom were residents of Tikrit in Salahadin province.

"The bodies of the four victims have been taken to the forensic medicine department at Azadi hospital," Pirshing Majid, head of the emergency unit at Kirkuk’s Azadi hospital, told Rudaw. "There are also three injured people; two are receiving treatment at Azadi Hospital and one at Kirkuk Public Hospital," she added.

The road witnessed the killing of five people and injuring four others in a similar traffic accident last year.

Car accidents are a common occurrence in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, where years of war, neglect, and corruption have affected its infrastructure.

Roads are often riddled with potholes and lack proper illumination, making it difficult to see when driving at night.

Last month, 13 people were killed in a traffic accident on the Baghdad-Diyala road.

Several people were also killed and 40 others injured in a car accident in August in Iraq’s southern Basra province during the million-person Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
