ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Tuesday that a Turkish drone targeted the vehicle of one of its fighters in Qamishli, northeast Syria (Rojava) earlier this week, killing the fighter and injuring two other members of the forces who were accompanying him.
“On the evening of November 6, a Turkish UAV targeted a car that was driven by our fighter Mitan Shorash / Kamal Muhammad Ali Dodo and his two comrades, resulting in the martyrdom of our comrade Mitan who was on leave visiting his family,” read a statement from the SDF, using his nom de guerre and real name respectively.
The attack took place in Qamishli city, according to the force.
He was a 27-year-old “robust and courageous” fighter, noted the US-backed force, pledging to “retaliate.”
The Turkish defence ministry claimed on Sunday that its forces killed two Kurdish fighters in northern Syria without elaborating when and where the attack took place.
Turkey claims that the People’s Protection Units (YPG), backbone of the SDF, is the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) - an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. Both groups are listed as terror organizations by Ankara.
