QAMISHLI, Syria — Farmers in Qamishli villages near the Turkish border work in fear due to nearby Turkish observation posts, they have told Rudaw.
Rojava's northeast canton, Jazeera, shares 170km of border with Turkey, which invaded Rojava, the Kurdish term for northeast Syria, in October 2019, displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
"Someone was killed about six to seven months ago during sowing season. He was an innocent farmer. His son was also killed," said farmer Mohammed Atta.
Turkey has several observation posts in the area, and farmers say Turkish troops have fired at them while they work.
"There is no guarantee [to not be shot] but this is our land and we have to work on it. We plant despite the risks. We have no other option," said Hazhar Mohammed.
The [Turkish] invading state does not allow the farmers to work on their farms. We as the Administration also face difficulties when we fertilize the crops. They have fired at us as well," said Abdulbaqi Musa, co-chair of Qamishli's agriculture directorate.
