ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A massive explosion has rocked Syria’s western Idlib province on Wednesday, according to Syrian media reports, which noted that the cause of the blast remains unknown.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the explosion ripped through an arms depot in the town of Kfar Tkharim, in Idlib western countryside, adding that the blast went off “near a school, resulting in a number of injuries" and that ambulances rushed to the scene to evacuate the wounded.

SOHR reported that security forces have deployed to the area amid “attempts to verify the causes of the explosion and identify the party responsible.”

According to local sources cited by the monitor, “the explosion was caused by an ammunition depot belonging to one of the factions, located within a densely populated area.”

SOHR stressed the importance of “keeping weapons and ammunition stores away from civilian gatherings and populated areas to safeguard the lives and safety of civilians.”
