ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish security forces arrested 116 "irregular" migrants in the northwestern province of Edirne. Iraqis were among them, reported state media on Friday.
Anadolu Agency cited security sources as saying that the country’s gendarmerie forces carried out operations against groups of people trying to illegally leave the country to Europe through Edirne which borders with Greece and Bulgaria.
The operations resulted in the arrest of 116 irregular migrations from Iraq, Syria, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Egypt and Afghanistan.
Legal action was taken against the migrants.
Turkey says it “has taken a certain position on irregular migration both by taking effective measures against irregular migration at national level and by actively participating in most of the activities regarding the identification of the problems, information exchange, joint struggle and cooperation on irregular migration at international level.”
In 2016, Turkey and the EU signed a multi-billion euro deal aimed at containing a wave of migration into Europe. Under the deal, Ankara agreed to stop people from traveling irregularly to Europe and to accept failed asylum seekers from Europe.
