ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Democrat Joe Biden has been elected the next president of the United States, CNN and FOX project, after surpassing the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.
The former US vice-president was declared the winner following a prolonged and charged process of vote counting that started on Tuesday. Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes pushed Biden over the threshold to a total of 273 electoral votes, reports CNN.
US president Donald Trump is refusing to accept victory.
"The simple fact is this election is far from over," he warned in a statement.
"Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor," added the President who has been claiming voter fraud even prior to the election.
Biden was Delaware's longest-serving senator, and served as vice-president under President Barack Obama. He will be the 46th president of the US.
Kamala Harris, slated to serve as US vice-president, will be the first Black woman and first person with South Asian ancestry to be elected to the role.
