ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel told Rudaw on Friday that Europe should not ignore the recent protests in Iran, saying the fact that the morality police decide about the fate of women in Iran is a “shame.”
Iran is currently in its fifth week of protests which have engulfed the country since the death of Kurdish Mahsa (Zhina) Amini on September 16 while in the custody of the morality police in Tehran. The use of violence by Iranian security forces to disperse the demonstrators has been widely condemned by the international community.
Iran has also been accused of supporting Russia in the fight against Ukraine.
“Definitely, we have sanctioned Iran for providing drones to Russia. Today, we want to talk about Iran’s issues together,” Bettel told Rudaw’s Alla Shally in Brussels where European Union leaders are holding a summit.
Zhina “did not die as a result of an accident but was killed by the morality police. It is the year 2022 and the morality police make decisions in a country about women. This is a shame,” the prime minister added.
“We cannot ignore the developments in Iran because the events continue and we have to monitor them,” he noted.
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Bettel claimed that Russia is losing support.
“Russia is losing supporting voices at the UN. Most countries say that the Russian invasion is a violation. Anti-Russia voices are increasing around the world.”
