MEDYKA, Poland - A pianist has come all the way from Italy to the Ukraine-Poland border to play piano for the arriving migrants fleeing war at home. The Ukrainians find solace in his performance.

Davide Martello says he wants to spread peace and love in the world, noting that he did not expect the warm welcome he received by Ukrainian migrants on the Polish border.

“Before I came here, I did not expect this whole thing. It opens my heart to see people from Ukraine play my piano. It is such a wonderful thing,” he told Rudaw’s Hadi Salimi on Sunday.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The ongoing war has displaced millions of Ukrainians to Poland and other European countries.

Danil Leschanko, who uses a wheelchair, finds peace while listening to Martello playing the piano.

“We have come from a road full of danger. For me as a person with special needs, the situation is twice as tough, because others can go on foot, but I cannot. I have come with my brother, and at this point, we do not know where we will be going,” said the Ukrainian refugee.

Leila Sorenchekov is a Ukrainian pianist who has fled to neighboring Poland along with her family. She found a moment of calm after sitting in Martello's place to play her favorite musical instrument.

She described the war at home as being "awful" and said she has no idea when it might end.
