ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish forces in Zilkan, Nineveh province came under rocket attack late Friday, according to Kurdish counterterrorism forces. The attack did not cause casualties or material damage. This is the second reported assault on Turkish army in Iraq since a shelling, blamed on Turkey, in Duhok province killed nine civilians.
Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said on its Facebook page late Friday that three grad rockets were fired at Turkish military base in Zilkan subdistrict, adding that one rocket hit near the base while two others landed in the vicinity of a nearby village. “They did not cause any casualties or material damage.”
The CTD also said that the rockets were fired from Mosul city, noting that five rockets were prepared to be fired but only three could be fired.
Mohammed Amin Gharib, mayor of Zilkan, told Rudaw earlier in the night that only one rocket was fired at the military base.
Zilkan military base has been targeted dozens of times in recent years.
The attack comes two days after a shelling in Zakho, Duhok province killed nine Arab tourists and injured 22 others from Iraq’s central and southern provinces. Baghdad and Erbil have blamed the Turkish army for the deadly attack while Ankara denied its involvement.
Iraqis have strongly condemned the Zakho attack through protests, attacks on Turkish embassy in Baghdad and Turkish visa application centres, calls to boycott Turkish products and anti-Turkey hashtags on social media.
