ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Sunday addressed the importance of strengthening the border security of the Region and Iraq, in light of repeated attacks from neighbors Iran and Turkey.

Sudani received Barzani in Baghdad for the second time this week, discussing the latest political and security developments in the country, as well as the framework of joint work between the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) within the objectives of the new cabinet in Baghdad.

“Both sides stressed the importance of resolving security issues and working towards peace and stability in the border areas with neighboring countries as decided at the last meeting of the [Iraqi] National Security Council.,” read a statement from President Barzani’s office following the meeting with the Iraqi premier.

The National Security Council on Wednesday decided to take steps to increase the deployment of troops on its borders with Iran and Turkey in an effort to curb further violations of its sovereignty as attacks by Tehran and Ankara have greatly surged in recent months.

Iran and Turkey have greatly increased their cross-border attacks on the Kurdistan Region in recent months, with the former targeting Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups based in the Region on the grounds that they are fueling the ongoing unrest in the Islamic republic while the latter on Sunday launched a fresh aerial campaign targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the Region.

Barzani and Sudani met on Tuesday as well, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in facing repeated violations against Iraq’s sovereignty.
