ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish Airlines announced on Friday that it is ordering 75 aircraft from Boeing, with delivery scheduled between 2029 and 2034, and has completed negotiations on the purchase of another 150 planes.
"With these orders, our entire fleet is targeted to consist of new-generation aircraft by 2035, thereby strengthening operational efficiency and supporting an average annual growth rate of around 6%," the company said in a statement to the Istanbul stock exchange.
The airline said it has decided to purchase 75 of the B787-9 and B787-10 models, consisting of 50 firm and 25 option orders, and negotiated the purchase of 100 firm and 50 option orders for 737-8/10 MAX models.
The announcement was made a day after US President Donald Trump hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House. Trump said Turkey may agree to his request to stop buying Russian oil, and in response, he would lift sanctions on Ankara so it can purchase American F-35 fighter jets.
Erdogan's purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems angered Trump during his first term in office, leading the US to remove Turkey from the F-35 program.
Despite a strong personal bond between Trump and Erdogan, the US-Turkey relationship has been strained. A key point of contention is Washington's backing of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria.
