ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdish leaders congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on Saturday, after he defeated President Donald Trump in the race to become the United States' 46th president.
"My heartfelt congratulations to President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris on their victory in the U.S. presidential election. I look forward to working together to further strengthen our partnership and bilateral ties," President of the Kurdistan Region Nechrivan Barzani wrote on Twitter.
"I look forward to continuing close, strong cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the US," prime minister Masrour Barzani tweeted on Saturday evening, congratulating Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris. "Our partnership is crucial to regional stability and prosperity," he added.
The former US vice-president was declared the winner following a prolonged and charged process of vote counting that started on Tuesday. Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes pushed Biden over the threshold to a total of 273 electoral votes, reported CNN. The state of Nevada was also projected to go to Biden shortly after.
"I extend warmest congratulations to President-elect @JoeBiden, a friend and trusted partner in the cause of building a better Iraq. We look forward to working to achieve our common goals and strengthening peace and stability in the entire Middle East," Iraq’s President Barham Salih tweeted.
Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani also congratulated Joe Biden and "the first ever female #VPOTUS" Kamala Harris, tweeting "we look forward to working with his administration to build on our already strong partnership with the US government, the US military and the American people."
US vice president-elect Kamala Harris, will be the first Black woman and first person with South Asian ancestry to hold the role.
"I express my heartfelt congratulations to you, my friend, president-elect @JoeBiden for your victory. I sincerely hope and pray that the free world under your leadership will witness more peace and prosperity" the leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, said in a tweet.
Biden was Delaware's longest-serving senator, and served as vice-president under President Barack Obama. He will be the 46th president of the US when sworn into office in January.
