ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran on Saturday hanged two men in public over an October attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants on the city of Shiraz last year which claimed the lives of at least thirteen people, state media reported.
“Two main elements of the October 2022 terrorist attack on the Shah Cheragh holy shrine in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz have been executed,” IRNA said. “The terrorists were hanged early on Saturday near the scene of the incident.”
On October 26, gunmen opened fire on worshippers at Shiraz’s Shah Cheragh mosque, the second-holiest site in Iran. At least 13 people lost their lives in the assault, which ISIS claimed on Amaq news magazine later during the day.
Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Ghotali were initially handed death sentences in March, after being convicted of “aiding in the corruption of earth, rebellion and action against the security of the country.” Authorities accused them of directly being involved in arming and guiding the main perpetrator of the attack, who was killed in a clash with security forces during his arrest.
Three other defendants were handed prison sentences of five, 15, and 25 years for ISIS membership.
