ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One person was killed in a car bombing in Damascus on Saturday, state media reported.

An explosive was attached to a civilian vehicle in al-Iskan neighborhood of Damascus, SANA reported, citing an unnamed police source. The driver was killed when the bomb went off.

No country or group has been blamed for the blast.

Three other cars parked near the targeted one were also burned, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The UK-based war monitor reported that the explosion took place near the Mezzeh neighborhood where the Iranian embassy is located.

On April 1, several members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF) were killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy.

The Syrian state has blamed Israel for many attacks on its soil. While it rarely comments on strikes attributed to it in Syria, Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran gaining a foothold there and has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, claiming to strike pro-Iran militias such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group that supports the Syrian army.

In response to the strike on its embassy, Tehran carried out its first direct attack on Israel, firing hundreds of missiles and drones. Tel Aviv claimed it intercepted 99 percent of the missiles and drones.
