ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States military on Sunday announced it killed an Islamic State (ISIS) leader in a strike in eastern Syria that it said will disrupt the group’s ability to plan and conduct terror attacks.
“On July 7, U.S. Central Command conducted a strike in Syria that resulted in the death of Usamah al-Muhajir, an ISIS leader in eastern Syria,” read the statement.
The US-led coalition against ISIS is assessing a report that a civilian was injured in the strike.
“We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region,” said Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, commander of US Central Command.
“ISIS remains a threat, not only to the region but well beyond,” he added.
The strike was conducted by the same unmanned aerial vehicle (MQ-9) that the US said had been harassed by a Russian aircraft.
After their territorial defeat in March 2019 to a military operation led by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and backed by the US-led global coalition, ISIS militants have carried out hit-and-run attacks on civilians and military targets of both the Syrian regime and the Kurdish-led authority in the northeast of the country, a region known as Rojava.
Since the start of this year, ISIS has carried out over 80 attacks targeting the SDF and Rojava’s administration, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
